Go Karts & Instagram!

When your neighbors have go karts and there are open lots across the street… supercharged racing will ensue!!  🙂

These were all taken with my Canon 5DMarkIII and my Tamaron 70-200mm f/2.8… that’s how I’m able to freeze time!  But what about using your phone?  Can you capture these shots using the phone in your hand?  Maybe… the technology has come a LONG way!  You can command a camera phone better than ever, but you will still have to follow some rules of photography to make your phone pictures pop! 🙂

For instance, if you want to take better pictures of your kiddos for posting on instagram… first and for most make sure your camera phone lens is clean!  Oil and grime can collect on the lens and will make your pictures cloudy and blurry.  Clean gear does matter!

Second, look for the light!!  The definition of photography is “painting with light”… so you’ve got to figure out where the good light is!  Indirect, diffused light is hard to see at first, but it’s definitely some of the best light to play with!  Harsh sunlight will make your kiddos squint and give them super harsh shadows.   So look around… where’s the shade?  Ok good!  Now put them in the shade and try to see where the light illuminates their face (this requires both of you being flexible & moving around – you don’t want any uneven lighting/shadows/bright spots on their face).

Third, look at their eyes… do you see the little twinkle?  You are actually looking for the catchlight in their eyes (yes this is an actual photography term!).  You might have to get closer or zoom in the camera lens to see the catchlights but they make a HUGE difference.  If you are in good light and can see the catchlights in their eyes – you’ve found a sweet spot!  Without the catchlights, the eyes seem dull and lifeless in the final picture.  I generally focus on the eyes when I’m taking pictures… the more light and catchlight I can find, the better the picture! 🙂

Now quick focus on their face and click the picture before they move!!  🙂

Oh, one more thing, there is a TON of distortion that comes with these little hand-held super charged camera phones!  To reduce the effect of distortion, turn your camera sideways so it looks like more of a traditional point & shoot camera.  Not only will you have more background interest in the picture, but you will avoid some of the distortion!  Another trick is to watch the angle of your camera.  If you are standing too close and pointing the camera down at your kiddos, their heads will look way bigger then their bodies!  Although this is fun occasionally, it’s not ideal for good pictures.  Step back and keep your camera more level to get a more pleasing shot.  This holds true for videos as well… turn the phone so you have more field of view in your video!

Now just upload to instagram!  Hope that helps!  Happy snapping!!  🙂

NWA Family Photography : World’s Largest Baby Shower

I’m super excited about participating in this year’s “World’s Largest Baby Shower” event in Springdale, AR this Saturday, March 29, 2014.  You will find me with the NWA Kids Directory Team (I think we will be in the lobby/foyer area of the NWA Convention Center).  I will have a “Best Bump” contest…. if you stop by and let me take a picture of you & your bump, your picture will be entered into a facebook like fest… get the most likes and win a newborn session and DVD (valued at $350).  WHOA!!  Yes, that’s right – you will win if you get the most likes on your bump picture (but don’t forget to like my Capture Me Photography by Nicole & the NWA Kids Directory facebook PAGES – yes you need to like both pages!!).

I will also have pictures and cards available so if you have questions about my birth photography, newborn photography or milestone plans for your new little ones… come by and let’s chat! 🙂  If you miss the show, you can always call or send me an email (or text or facebook or tweet or … you get the point, I’m pretty easy to get a hold of!)

Here’s a series of pictures from one of my favorite birth sessions.  Thanks again Shea & the team of midwives from A Mommy’s Butterfly Midwifery!!  I feel very blessed to have been apart of this special birth! 🙂

NWA Family Photographer | Week 14: Twilight Challenge

Week 14 Twilight (aka the available light right as the sun sets or just after it has set) was a challenge for a number of reasons.  Not because twilight photography is difficult, it was just COLD out this week and most of the week we had thick clouds.  I went out Wednesday night to catch this slim section of sunset over a snowy landscape.  At 12 degrees (doesn’t include windchill), I didn’t have much time to compose & recompose my shots.   But in the end I take this week as great practice for analyzing the variables and composing the shots rapidly.  I have to be ready to analyze situations and compose shots quickly (toddlers do not sit still for long at all!).  This is what differentiates me from a lot of photographers and allows me to lean on my engineering background.  Ready, aim, fire!  (camera of course!)

Ok, stats from these pictures :

Canon 5DMarkIII, 24-70L 2.8, ISO 200, f 2.8, SS 1/400 – and 12 degrees outside!

Here’s another one from my brief twilight session – don’t know how the “rainbow” lines were captured, maybe it was the cold air shining back onto my sensor?  Kinda cool tho!

NWA Family Photographer : Week 13 Daylight Off Camera Flash

Week 13 challenge was to use off camera flash during the day to create an image.  Unfortunately, I procrastinated for too long this week before starting this challenge and I had no beautiful sunset for my background.  I watched a few small youtube videos this week with techniques for underexposing the clouds behind you and then using the off camera flash for dramatic pictures.  Well, yesterday afternoon was cold & dreary and NO fun clouds behind.  I still underexposed for the sky but quickly realized I need a soft box and not just a small diffuser for my flash.  Learned a lot even if I’m not happy with this picture.  In the end, that’s the essence of this challenge… to learn new skills.  Ok, onto week 14 but will definitely be revisiting this technique!!

Picture Stats:

Canon 5D Mark III, 24-70L 2.8, ISO 200, f2.8, SS 1/50

Now to go watch the Superbowl!! 🙂
